What ought a life model to say in an interview?
I hand over two print-outs of Jeremy’s pictures of me, and a drawing I snapped on my mobile by one of the Harrogate punters. The Foundation Art and Design Course Team Leader looks at Jeremy’s head-and-shoulders portrait (see it on my noticeboard below) and says ‘early Stanley Spencer’. Hmm, do you agree? Then he scrutinises one of the nude sketches; thankfully, the least fat one of the two. Here it is.
Is Mr Team Leader staring at the drawing technique or at my body?

This topic kicks off my next four-week discussion, ‘Creative people and madness’. If you click on the above question you will read my tosh on the subject. Please improve the discussion by adding your opinion. The topic begins with a poem that will appear in THIN BONES LIKE WISH-BONES, my and Sue Vickerman‘s joint poetry collection due out with Indigo Dreams Publishing in September 2013.

1. THIS TUESDAY 9 JULY 2013 – places left at Suki’s Life Room (scroll down to Bradford): 10-12 noon and/or 1-3pm, four-hour pose, £6 per two hours. Or book a future Tuesday!
And don’t forget 2013 SUMMER SATURDAYS: 20 JULY, 17 AUGUST, 21 SEPTEMBER: six-hour pose, £18 (£9 half-day). Where are you? New York? Shanghai? Fly in to London, get a direct train to Bradford (or National Express coach ‘funfare’ for £12 return) and stay over in the Travelodge which is one minute from here. We’ll ply you with coffee and brioche rolls; we’ll advise on where the fun/culture/best curry house is. Spend a whole brilliant weekend in boho Bradford. Info/bookings: admin@sukithelifemodel.co.uk.
2. The painting by Conservative Jeremy I referred to in the above page of my autobiography was actually done by SAM DALBY. The portrait will appear again in a later installment, but here it is, so that you can make that ‘Stanley Spencer’ comparison.

Artist of the week
TONY NOBLE is a full-time artist. Exhibitions include the Tate Gallery’s BP Portrait Award 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013; Royal Society of Portrait Painters 2010, 2011; ING Discerning Eye 2010, 2011; Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2009, 2010; Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Exhibition 2011 (see the painting and a review here). Flippin’ ‘eck.
Tony and artist Tom Wood hold weekly and weekend life-drawing sessions (see Tom’s renowned blog for samples of work) at their famous shared studio – the top floor of Redbrick Mill in Yorkshire, UK (see here for times/cost: scroll down to Batley). It is Tony’s job (for my sins, as he puts it) to organize the models.
